The Kalamazoo Bicycle Club's Bike Camp 2008
What is Bike Camp?
Bike Camp is a training and informational program targeted toward bicyclists who desire to improve their biking skills, fitness, and knowledge of the sport in a friendly group environment.
Who would benefit from attending Bike Camp?
Families, adults new to road cycling, and those renewing their interest in the sport.
What is the format of Bike Camp?
Bike Camp starts with a 90 minute evening session at 7 pm, Tuesday, May 13, room 5830, KVCC's Oshtemo campus, in the Advanced Technology Center.
This initial session will contain an overview of safe bicycle handling practices for group and individual riding, including safety and bikers' rights on the roadway with respect to automobile traffic. We'll also give you a preview of the topics that will be covered at each Saturday session - from demonstrating your personalized "bike fitting" for greater riding comfort, to advice on what to eat and drink before, during and after riding, to what to wear, basic bicycle maintenance, training techniques, how to change a flat tire, how to train for a specific distance goal, and more! We'll also ask you to fill out a survey that will help us identify your current fitness level and bicycling goals. This is an informational session only; please do not bring your bike.
Five consecutive Saturday morning sessions follow, starting on May 17, at 8:30 am at the Portage YMCA, 2900 West Centre. Each two-hour session begins with a short presentation regarding a specific aspect of bicycling or fitness, followed by group training rides of various paces and distances, led by experienced cyclists. Bike Campers at similar fitness levels and with similar distance goals will ride together. Helmets are required.
The last "session" of Bike Camp is the culmination of your training toward a distance goal at KBC's "KalTour," the Kalamazoo Scenic Bicycle Tour, on Sunday, July 13. As a participant in Bike Camp, your entry fee to this event is paid, and you can decide on the day of the tour which of the routes to ride. Details about KalTour can be found here.
An additional benefit of Bike Camp is that you'll receive membership in the Kalamazoo Bicycle Club for one year, which includes receiving the club's monthly electronic PedalPress newsletter. A list of the other benefits of membership can be found elsewhere on this website. Existing KBC memberships will be extended for one year.
