Non-Emergencies: Whom to Call

Most of our club-sanctioned rides are on roads maintained by the Kalamazoo County Road Commission (KCRC) and Van Buren County, except within certain cities and villages. The Michigan Department of Transportation (MDOT) covers state roads ("M" roads like M-40, M-43, M-60, M-66, M-89, and M-96), Interstates (I-94), and US highways (US-131), and the bridges over them. Still unsure? Call the KCRC; they will route your report to the proper authority. We've found that the people you talk to genuinely want to keep our roads safe. They rely on the public to report problems and receive reports from citizens daily. Most jurisdictions keep regular business hours; you may need to leave voice mail during off hours.

How to Report

Be as specific as possible and courteous. Explain why the problem is a hazard. For example: "I'd like to report a pothole 10 feet north of the intersection of ABC Avenue and 123rd Street, on the south side of the road in the shoulder. The hole is about three feet long, one foot wide, and 2 inches deep. It's big enough to cause a rider to swerve into traffic unexpectedly." Note the person's name and the date you called. With smaller budgets, fewer people, and scheduling logistics, correcting a problem takes more or less time. However, if it is not corrected within a reasonable period, follow up with the jurisdiction or email pothole.
