KBC-Chain Gang Memorial LCI Scholarships

The Kalamazoo Bicycle Club will be granting scholarships for a League of American Bicyclist’s (LAB) League Certified Instructor (LCI) training course to be held August 13, 14, and 15, 2021 in Portage. The LAB Smart Cycling one-day course is the required prerequisite.

The cost of the LCI training course is $500. The KBC will pay $400 of this, and the attendee $100. KBC members will be considered first, then other non-KBC cyclists residing in the greater Kalamazoo area. Applicants will be chosen who commit to conducting or participating in bicycle skills training sessions, such as KBC’s Bike Camp, LAB’s Smart Cycling courses, or other similar road cycling training, within the greater Kalamazoo area. Once LCI certification is achieved, there are yearly requirements to maintain your LCI certification. See the details here: https://bikeleague.org/content/become-instructor.

The goals for KBC LCI scholarships are:

1. Increase the number of LCIs within the greater Kalamazoo area.

2. Increase the number of skills training programs in the area.

3. Promote good will toward bicycling in the area.

4. Improve bicycle safety through educational outreach in the area.

KBC Club Rides Restarting Monday, May 31st!

AT LAST! The Covid positivity rate has dropped low enough that we can restart club rides. Enough sanctioned ride leaders are willing to lead rides, and we will encourage ride leaders to split their groups in half if they feel the size is too large under present circumstances.

Club rides begin next Monday, May 31 at Texas Drive Park at 6:15. All other regular club rides will follow suit–the Tuesday night Women’s ride from Pedal South, the usual Wednesday Night Rides from the Kal-Haven Trailhead on N. 10th St., the Thursday ride from Pedal South, and the Friday Morning Women’s Ride from Texas Drive Park at 9:30. The Tuesday Time Trial will continue as previously scheduled–the first & third Tuesdays of each month at 6:00 at the Pavillion Township Hall located at the corner of 29th St. and Q Ave.

We are aware that some group rides have been starting at 6:00, or even earlier. You might want to be there ready to ride at 6:00 until everything is back to normal. For now KBC is sticking with 6:15 for all evening rides.

Thanks to each of you for bearing with us through this difficult and unprecedented time. We look forward to seeing all of you on the road soon!

Paul Guimond, Vice-President
Satcie Ballard, Secretary

2021 KBC Jersey!

Yes, folks, the club has a new jersey design. Giordana will be making a club fit jersey for us in men’s and women’s sizes from XXS – 5XL, and club members will be able to place and pay for their orders through Giordana’s online store. Ordering information and a link to the online store will be emailed to all KBC members right before the store opens. Ordering information will also be available in the members-only area of the KBC website.

Online store hours:

12:00pm April 19th to 12:00pm April 26th.

The store will be open for one week starting April 19th at noon. We’re doing our best to let members know about the jersey. Please spread the word!

Cost of the jersey is $62.10.

The jerseys will be delivered around June 4th – 9th. To save on shipping costs, jerseys will be delivered in bulk. With the weather warming up in June, we’ll be able to have our June club meeting outdoors which will be a perfect time for members to pick up their jerseys. There will also be other dates and times available for picking up your jersey if you can’t make it to the meeting.

Thanks to Clark Bennett for inspiring us to create a new jersey. We hope you like the new design by local graphic artist Carolyn Fink and look forward to seeing the new jersey out on the road!

To help select the correct size jersey, in addition to the sizing chart in the online store, Giordana has shared a file that has garment measurements for all sizes of men’s and women’s Vero Pro jerseys. Find a jersey that fits the way you like, lay it on a table and compare its measurements to the measurements in this file.

Members: To order a jersey, log in to your account on the KBC website (click here to log in to your account), then return to this page and click the link below (you won’t see the link until you login). The online store will be open from 12:00pm April 19th to 12:00pm April 26th. If you’d like to join KBC, click here.
